The research is done. The evidence is in.
The best minds with PhD’s and EdD’s; parents; professors; professionals, and teachers know something that everyone out there should know.
Here it is: Inclusive practices and their impact on children with and without disabilities is positive and leads to more successful outcomes than segregated settings. The trajectory that the life of a child with a disability takes starts very early. Inclusion sets an expectation that possibilities will be pursued. The benefits are positive for children with disabilities. Including children with disabilities benefits ALL children.
The issue of INCLUSION is urgent.
Doug Fisher, from San Diego State University, said “Disability is part of the human experience.” Like culture. Like race. Like nationality. But many families are entrenched in a struggle about whether or not their child with a disability should fully participate in their world, in their school, in their community.
We have a world that has institutionalized disability as separate and apart from the rest of the society. Thankfully - that is changing; inclusion is taking hold.
